ELP Islam presentation

Here you will find the Powerpoint presentation that the pupils in ELP RME made to show what they have learned about Islam this year with Mrs Monaco and more recently with Ms Balsille.

Week beginning March 17th 2008…

March 13, 2008

This week herald’s the start of the school holidays to celebrate Easter. The school will close for the break on Thursday March 20th and re-open on Tuesday April 8th 2008.

We hope all of the children enjoy the opportunity to take a well earned rest and recharge their batteries for the final term of the session. It is amazing to consider how quickly the academic year has passed!

This week on the ELP programme we will be undertaking a number of activities preparing for the holidays – and our return.

Science

In science this week we will be doing some maintenance work on our weather station before preparing it to run for the entire holiday. We will also be spending a lesson cleaning out the fish tank for Fingers – as we will have to leave him with a food block in his tank over the break, we will also need to ensure he has a fresh tank full of clean and lovely water!

Maths

In maths we have made significant breakthroughs in telling the time and we will continue to incorporate time telling in our other maths activities. We will be looking at key times in our daily and weekly routine. What time is lunch? When do we start Period 5? What time do we stop for break?

Social Studies

In Social Studies we will be continuing our mapping work. We have drawn a map of East Lothian, labelled it and presented it for the class. This week we are concentrating on the map of the world – what does it look like? What continent are we on? What shape is Africa? (like an elephant’s ear, says Mrs Binnie!)

Week beginning March 10th 2008…

March 6, 2008

In a week’s time people in Ireland will be celebrating St Patrick’s Day. It is a special occasion that is not only enjoyed in places like Dublin and Cork but also in the likes of New York, Boston and other American towns…even in Akron, Ohio!

Akron’s 28th annual St. Patrick’s Day “Irish Celebration” Parade was at 12pm on March 8th (Saturday past) starting at Cedar and Main Street and ending at Bowery and Main Street. The parade hosted floats, ethnic groups, animals, Irish dancers, clowns and an honour guard. On St Patrick’s Day itself The Ancient Order of Hibernians, Akron’s oldest Irish club, will hold the city’s biggest St. Patrick’s Day party. The day starts with a 9. a.m. church service – and food and drink run from at 11 a.m. till midnight. From 12 noon there will be live music including popular Callahan and O’Connor, one of Akron’s best Irish bands.

Why is all this happening in Akron? This week we look at how many people in the town we are now finding out about came not only from Ireland – but from Scotland as well. Why did people from Scotland or East Lothian move to America? We will be hoping to find out as part of our On Our Doorstep cross curricular project whilst in history, ICT and OOD lessons…

Elsewhere this week…

Maths

The children made significant progress last week with telling the time. It was so uplifting to see their confidence grow that we are going to capitalise on this again in the lessons between now and Easter. By using bus timetables, school timetables, television listings and improvisations as educational props we will be practising our time telling at every opportunity.

Importantly, we will also be talking about the clocks going forward this month – to herald the start of British Summer Time. What impact will that have on our daily lives?

French

In French the children have had great fun learning nouns that name items of clothing. Whether it be the very obvious t-shirt or the not so obvious jupe, the pupils have enjoyed practising the words they have chosen to work on with Ms Russell.

Social Studies

In Social Studies we will be looking again at the importance of maps. We have been working out what a plan of a bedroom might look like from above. How would East Lothian look from the sky? How would we draw it?

Science

In Science we are now starting to plan for next term and our new Preston Lodge Plants project! What sort of garden will be looking to plant and what will we grow there? Where will we position it and how will we look after it?
